Nokia might become the first Android smartphone maker to launch devices with more than three camera on the back. An upcoming flagship from Nokia-brand licensee HMD Global recently appeared to show penta camera setup. Now, more real-life images of the device in question have made its way to the internet.

The smartphone is reportedly dubbed as Nokia 9 and will feature not one or two or three but five different cameras on the back. This will be a huge leap from the triple lens solution seen on Huawei P20 Pro, launched in March early this year. The new image was first posted on the ITHome forums and was later picked up by the website. The IT industry platform believes that this device will be called Nokia 10 and not Nokia 9 when it gets official.

The image shared by ITHome is the first clear image of a Nokia-branded flagship with penta camera setup. The system seems to use five Zeiss lenses and one can see that three of these lenses are aligned vertically next to each other while two other lenses sit next to either side. There is a LED flash assembly on left-hand side of vertically camera array while the purpose of another such assembly remains unknown.

HMD Global has been tight lipped about its plans for flagship devices and the Nokia 9 or Nokia 10 might finally show the prowess of Zeiss optics. The Finnish company recently also received trademark for using the term Pureview camera on its devices, which will resonate with all those who would have used a Nokia Lumia smartphone at some point.

In terms of specifications, the Nokia 9 is rumored to come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC. This will be the first device from the company to use the latest Qualcomm chip since its previous flagships, the Nokia 8 and Nokia 8 Sirocco were based on Snapdragon 835 platform.

Light, a camera startup, had recently told The Washington Post that it plans to launch a smartphone with up to 9 lens on the back of the device. Light is expected to use image sensors with focal length ranging from 25mm to 150mm. LG is rumored to launch its V40 flagship with three cameras on the back and two cameras at the front later this year. The big question for consumers will be whether more cameras translate into improved imaging performance.
