When the Nokia name was phased out in favor of Microsoft a few years ago, it marked a significant change in the presence of a once iconic name in the mobile phone industry. Many will argue that Nokia was already doomed when it picked the Windows Phone platform over Android and then subsequently got acquired by Microsoft, but all of that is in the past. Two years ago, the Nokia name made a comeback with HMD Global, a new entity built by former Nokia executives and backed by Taiwanese OEM Foxconn.

This return has been successful, as HMD Global announced that it has sold over 70 million Nokia devices in the two years since the brand’s return. While a chunk of these are the company’s Android-powered smartphones, feature phones also add to the numbers. The range is made up of popular feature phones including the refreshed Nokia 3310, along with the full range of Android One-powered smartphones such as the recently launched Nokia 7.1 and Nokia 3.1 Plus.

Further details shared and reported on by PhoneArena include an interesting statistic – 56 million of the phones sold in the two-year period were purchased by men over the age of 35 that knew of the Nokia brand name. This suggests that much of HMD Global’s success comes as a result of sticking to the popular branding, styling and spirit that made Nokia mobile phones so successful in the 1990s and 2000s.

The company has also stated that its cheaper devices are the main source of income, while high-end devices have under-performed, showing that HMD Global still has some way to go to establish itself among high-end users. Chinese brands, along with Samsung and Apple, have effective control over the high-end smartphone space for now, and Nokia has some way to go before it can regain its once dominant position in the mobile phone space.
