HMD Global has started pushing out February security update to its Nokia 8 and Nokia 3 smartphones. According to Android security bulletin, there are seven issues resolved in the patch dated February 1, and 19 issues resolved in the patch dated February 5. The vulnerabilities patched with the update range from high to critical and the most severe vulnerability is related to the media framework that could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code through a specially “crafted file”. Google says that there are no reports of Android users being affected by these security vulnerabilities. Google released the February security patch for its Pixel and Nexus devices few days back along with factory images and OTA update file.
Nokiapoweruser reports the February security update for Nokia 8 is rolling to units sold in India and Jordan while the update for Nokia 3 is being released to those in India, Hungary and Thailand at the moment. HMD Global is focusing on releasing timely updates including security patches for its devices, and the company has even beaten Google by releasing security patches to its devices before they hit Pixel or Nexus devices.
The dedicated bulletin for Google’s phones and tablets listed 29 security fixes, and 10 functional updates. The update activated the Pixel Visual Core on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL in third-party apps like Instagram, Snapchat and WhatsApp allowing these apps to take advantage of the HDR+ mode.
The monthly security update is meant to ensure that Android devices remain safe from critical vulnerabilities including zero-day exploits. The updates mostly bring fixes to exploits discovered in the past month and ensure secure platform protection like Google Play Protect for improved safety. It remains unclear when all devices in the market will get the update.
