Huawei, the Chinese smartphone maker is on a roll after recently launched the flagship Huawei P20 Pro with triple rear cameras, and Huawei P20 Lite smartphone with dual cameras in India. Last month, the company s sub-brand Honor launched the Honor 10 in China, and today at an event in London, the company launched the Honor 10 globally. The smartphone is priced at Rs 32,999, and will be available exclusively via Flipkart. It is already up for pre-order and shipping will begin from May 23. Flipkart is also offering 10 percent instant discount on Axis bank credit and debit cards, and Rs 5,000 extra off on exchanging your old smartphone. The Honor 10 borrows its design cues, specifications and features from the Huawei P20, with a few notable differences. I like the strategy Huawei is using, especially for the Indian market. The company launched the P20 Lite under Rs 20,000 segment, and the flagship P20 Pro, which is the company s flagship smartphone priced at Rs 64,999. Now, with the Honor 10, the company is properly placed with a mid-range, upper mid-range and flagship offering. OnePlus 6, which will be officially unveiled tomorrow is the direct competitor for the Honor 10. In terms of powerful hardware, the OnePlus 6 will get an advantage with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC and 8GB of RAM. The Kirin 970 SoC on the Honor 10 is Snapdragon 835 equivalent, and it is known offer a good mix between performance and efficiency. Together with 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage, you shouldn t have problems with day to day usage. I got to play around with the Honor 10 ahead of the launch, and here are my first impressions.
Watch: Huawei P20 Pro Review
Honor 10: Design
The Honor 10 is compact and easy to hold in one hand, thanks to the tall 5.84-inch display with 19:9 aspect ratio. The panel is bright, colorful and comes with a notch on the top, which houses the earpiece, front camera and the proximity sensor. There is also an option to hide the notch in the software with the help of black bars. Below the display, you have the under-glass fingerprint sensor, and you almost don t physically feel its presence.
The smartphone features a metal frame sandwiched between front and back glass. And yes, as in the case with other smartphones that feature glass design, the Honor 10 is also a fingerprint magnet and attracts a lot of smudges. It is also quite slippery, especially if you have sweaty palms. At the back, you have dual cameras placed on the top left with an LED flash. And unlike the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro that ditches the 3.5mm audio jack, the Honor 10 retails it.
Honor 10: AI Cameras
The highlight of the Huawei P20 series was the AI cameras, and the same continues with the Honor 10 as well. The software combines machine learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for scene detection to improve the photo quality. Basically, if you point the smartphone at the sky, it will detect the scene and boost the blue color of the sky.
You get a dual camera setup at the back with a primary 16-megapixel color sensor with f/1.8 aperture, and a 24-megapixel secondary monochrome sensor that aids in low-light scenario. Up front, the Honor 10 comes with a 24-megapixel selfie camera, same as the Huawei P20 series with AI features for beauty mode and object recognition. The AI is capable of semantic image segmentation that can recognize human, animal, greenery and sky from the image and improve the photos.
The dual cameras also support 2X optical zoom, portrait mode to blur background and also lets you click true monochrome (black and white) photos. The front camera also comes with iPhone X-like portrait lighting effect that lets you click photos with studio lighting. What about the quality? Well, I will be putting the smartphone through its paces over the next few days, and will reserve my judgment till then.
The Honor 10 comes runs Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box with a layer of EMUI on top. The smartphone comes with dual SIM card slots, and there is no expandable storage option, but 128GB storage should be good enough to suffice your storage needs. Honor is promising that the super charge feature can charge the battery from zero to 50 percent in just 25 minutes.
The presence of ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, face unlock, dual rear cameras, a good front camera and powerful hardware make the Honor 10 an interesting option in its price range. It will be interesting to see how the smartphone fares in front of the OnePlus 6. We will be bringing out the full review of the Honor 10, so stay tuned for that.
