Honor launch, Samsung launch, Oppo launch, Meizu launch, that’s how the day in technology can be summed up today. It was raining smartphone launches with 18:9 aspect ratio being a common theme among most of these products. If 2017 was a great year for smartphone makers in general then it seems that 2018 will be an even better for consumers in terms of choices.

Drifting away from smartphones, OnePlus confirmed that it is suspending credit card payment on its website following user reports of fraudulent activity on their cards. Xiaomi, meanwhile acknowledged that WhatsApp obsolete error was caused by its own beta update. Here is a rundown of all the happenings from the world of tech.

Reliance Jio not preferred operator for MNP: Report

Reliance Jio’s growth in the past year remains talk of the town but it is still mature as the primary service provider for its customers. A new report suggests that consumers using mobile number portability to switch service providers do no consider Reliance Jio as their preferred destination.

Its customer acquisition is still driven by new users and corresponds with previous reports which suggested that Jio is mostly used as secondary service by many of its users. With India being a dual-SIM country, it is no surprise that consumers are opting for two different networks with one SIM dedicated to data usage and another driving regular calling.

Honor 9 Lite launched

Honor pretty much ruled the day with the launch of its Honor 9 Lite smartphone. Honor has been strengthening its portfolio with new smartphones with full screen display that support 18:9 aspect ratio for the past few months. Honor 9 Lite is the latest addition to that segment and second device from the company to offer quad camera setup.

It features a 5.65-inch Full HD+ display, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage and Kirin 659 chipset. The highlight is the combination of 13-megapixel and 2-megapixel camera at the front as well as rear. The smartphone will be available at a starting price of Rs 10,999 and will go on sale from January 21 exclusively on Flipkart.

Samsung Galaxy On7 Prime launched

Samsung, the leading smartphone maker, has added another mid-range smartphone in its Galaxy lineup. The company launched Galaxy On7 Prime exclusively on Amazon India at starting price of Rs 12,990 and will go on sale starting January 20.

Samsung is offering cashback of Rs 2,000 in the form of JioMoney if you are a Reliance Jio user and make a recharge of Rs 299 for 24 consecutive months. The smartphone comes integrated with Samsung Wall, an integrated e-commerce platform where users search for products from partners including Jabong, Tata Cliq and Shopclues. It also supports Samsung Pay Mini which can be used to transfer money by simply scanning a code.

OPPO A83 launched

Oppo has seen significant growth in terms of sales in the Indian market and has now added another smartphone with 18:9 display to its lineup. Oppo A83 features a 5.7-inch HD+ display, 3GB RAM, 32GB storage and MediaTek chipset. It features a 13-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front camera.

The smartphone misses out on fingerprint scanner and relies on facial recognition as the method for unlocking the device. It is priced at Rs 13,990 and will be available both online as well as offline from January 20.

Meizu M6s launch

Meizu launched M6s, a smartphone powered by Samsung’s Exynos chipset at an event in China today. The smartphone features a 5.7-inch display with 1440 x 720 pixel resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio. It offers 3GB RAM and option for either 32GB or 64GB internal storage.

It sports a 16-megapixel primary camera with f/2.0 aperture and an 8-megapixel secondary camera with f/2.0 aperture. Like Sony, Meizu has embedded the fingerprint sensor on the side and the smartphone runs Android with company’s own UI. It starts at RMB 999 (approximately Rs 10,000) and will go on sale starting January 19.

Xiaomi WhatsApp obsolete

WhatsApp users were scared when they saw a notification on their devices suggesting the messaging app has turned obsolete. The flaw was mostly observed on smartphones made by Xiaomi and the Chinese smartphone has admitted that it is responsible for the issue.

“After a thorough investigation, we learned that a beta version of WhatsApp was pushed out on our Mi App Store a few days ago, which some users updated to,” Xiaomi said in statement. Even though re-installing the app fixed the issue, it is surprising that Xiaomi made WhatsApp obsolete on its device, which is one of the most heavily used app on its product.

Reliance JioPhone Rs 153 plan

After updating most of its data plans early this month, Reliance Jio is now revising the Rs 153 plan available exclusively for its JioPhone users. With recharge of Rs 153, JioPhone users will get 1GB data per day as opposed to 500MB data per day offered previously.

The validity of the plan remains the same at 28 days but the telecom operator continues to push the envelope when it comes to offering maximum data at cheapest price. However, Reliance Jio is yet to confirm when it will resume selling JioPhone and how many units it has sold since its announcement last year.

OnePlus credit card

OnePlus has confirmed that it has disabled credit card payment on its website after reports of fraudulent activity by some of its customers. The company is still investigating the issue but for now it is only accepting payments made via PayPal.

OnePlus had earlier said that its website is not affected by the Magento bug but for now, customers must keep an eye on their payment history and statements.
