Honor Magic 2 might just feature a Graphene-based battery

Graphene could do wonders to the battery and cooling technology of smartphones.

Honor Magic 2 is becoming a more interesting device by the day and after the initial unveil at CES 2018 where the device was touted to feature a bezel-less display along with a mechanical slider for the front camera. This made the phone look rather similar to the Oppo Find X and Honor also commented that the phone will also feature 40W fast-charging technology that will be called Magic Charge.

And now, there seems to be that there is new info out on the upcoming smartphone which will potentially make the device a unique one. According to the latest reports, Honor vice president Xiong Junmin, has said that the new Honor Magic 2 will feature a Graphene based battery technology, and apparently there are more surprises in store for the world when it launches.

To take a look back at how Honor would be implementing a very recently discovered material like Graphene in it new phone we must go back to 2016 when Huawei’s Watt Labs had announced at the Japanese Battery Symposium that it has made a breakthrough in manufacturing Graphene-Assisted High-Temperature Li-ion batteries.

What we gather from the press release by Huawei is that Graphene-assisted heat-resistant technologies application has allowed Lithium-ion batteries to work at higher temperatures. Presently the temperature threshold of Li-ion batteries is 50 degree Celsius which when using Graphene has been upped to 60 degree Celsius. And Huawei reports that Graphene also increases the battery life to double the present standards.

Graphene could have quite a few other applications in the Honor Magic 2 as well, like making an efficient cooling system, or keep the temperatures low when charging the battery using the 40W Magic Charging. Graphene is thin and light which makes it ideal for use in current smartphones, and it is cheap as well. All this will be revealed when the device launches. The expected launch date for the Honor Magic 2 is October 26.

Honor Magic 2: Specifications and Expected Price

Honor Magic was one of the most noteworthy devices from Huawei’s e-brand last year but it was not made available outside China. With Honor Magic 2, the Chinese company might have global ambitions, and could be preparing to launch the around around the world. The Honor Magic 2 will join Vivo NEX and Oppo Find X as smartphones with mechanical camera setup.

In terms of specifications, the Honor Magic 2 is rumored to feature a 6-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2880×1440 pixels. It would be safe to assume that Honor will go with Full HD+ panel, and not Quad HD+ like Huawei P20 Pro. A Full HD+ panel with notch at the top should allow for 19:9 aspect ratio, and over 95 percent screen-to-body ratio. At IFA 2018, Huawei announced Kirin 980, its newest flagship processor based on 7nm process and Honor Magic 2 should get this latest chipset.

It is expected to feature dual 12-megapixel camera setup on the back for imaging, and a 24-megapixel camera at the front for selfies. It is expected to come bundled with a new fast charger with a maximum power delivery of 20-24 watts. Huawei has designed its own fast charge technology, and there is a possibility that Honor Magic 2 will support fast wireless charging.

The Honor Magic 2 is also rumored to come standard with 6GB of RAM, and 64GB internal storage. The smartphone is expected to be backed by a 3,300mAh battery, and will run EMUI 9.0 based on Android 9 Pie. The Honor Magic 2 could be priced around RMB 3,999 (around Rs 40,000) when it goes on sale. At that price, Honor Magic 2 will be the most premium smartphone that also features a futuristic design but there is also a possibility of the device being a bit more expensive.
