How to book an Uber without installing the app

Want to book an Uber cab without installing the app on your phone. Now you can do that provided you have a smartphone with internet connectivity.

Up until now, the only way to book an Uber cab was to download the app, register yourself and login. However, in order to gain market share in India and to make it easier for first-time users to experience its service, Uber is letting users book a cab even if they don’t have the app and an Uber account. In order to make an app-less booking, go to webpage. The page prompts a Start Riding option, which is how the process of booking begins on the site. It will then ask for your phone number, so you can be contacted and notified regarding your booking. Also Read - Uber launches 'Uber Connect' package delivery service to rival Dunzo and Swiggy Genie

The contact detail is followed by the traditional permission to access information , once it is accepted, the web page takes you to the page that shows the nearest cab, with an option to ‘Book a Ride’ at the bottom of the screen. Once booked, the page shows the details of the cab booked, along with the option to call the driver or cancel the trip. The web page also has the same rule of cancellation of a booked cab as the app, which means you can cancel the ride within five minutes without paying a cancellation fee.

However, unlike the app, the Dial page does not allow a user to choose between Uber Go, UberPool or UberX categories of cabs and only shows the nearest available cab. The app shows the estimated time of arrival of the nearest cab, the minimum fare, the cab fare, and the estimated total fare. Also, the webpage only allows payments by cash.

Our experience with the web version of Uber was pretty great. It is quite descriptive in itself and effortlessly guides a user through it, which would be a boon for first-time users. The web page barely takes any longer than booking a cab through an app. It is an extremely simple alternative for the app.

Personally, I would still prefer using the app. At the end of the day, the app still has a slight upper hand over the Dial page. The app has the map that lets you track your cab, which is missing in the web page. It also lets you choose between the category of apps you want, and the method of payment. I wouldn t lose all that power to just get rid of one app from my smartphone! Having said that, the web version is the perfect growth hack for Uber to gain more first-time users in India.
