Apple has finally released the iOS 10 update for its iPhones, iPads and iPod touch sixth generation. The update is being rolled out over the air (OTA) and is also available to download and install using iTunes. The iOS 10 update brings performance improvements over iOS 9, along with a host of new features to enhance the user experience. The biggest feature in iOS 10 is undoubtedly the new iMessage interface that comes with stickers, emoticons and third-party app integration with the launch of iMessage App Store. The lock screen has now been redesigned with rich notifications, expanded 3D Touch and quick interactions with apps. Apple has also added raise to wake feature, which lets you raise your iPhone to wake the screen without pressing any buttons. Apple has also added a clear all button for dismissing the notifications. Siri also sees major improvement with third-party integration, so you can now ask it to send a message via WhatsApp, Wechat, Slack or other messaging apps as well as book an Uber among other things. With iOS 10, VoIP services are also treated as standard voice calls, so if you get a WhatsApp call, the notification will come like a proper call on the homescreen rather than just the phone buzzing. The Apple Maps app has also been overhauled with a new design, improved controls and features that proactively suggest you about time to reach work, lookup the event and find location. List of iOS 10 compatible devices
According to Apple, these are the iOS 10 compatible iPhones, iPads and iPod touch devices. However, not all iOS features may work on the older devices. For iPhones, iOS 10 is compatible with the iPhone SE, iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s Plus and obviously the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. For iPads, the list of iOS 10 compatible models include the latest iPad Pro and iPad Pro 9.7-inch apart from the iPad Air 2, iPad Air, iPad 4th generation, iPad mini 4, iPad mini 3 and iPad mini 2. iOS 10 is also compatible with the iPod touch 6th generation. How to prepare your device for iOS 10 update
Before you update your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to iOS 10 make sure that you take complete a backup of your data. You can do this on your iPhone by heading over to Settings > iCloud > Backup. This will backup your list of apps, app data, text messages and Safari bookmarks on iCloud. You can also backup other content like photos and videos, but make sure that you do it from a Wi-Fi connection to avoid data charges. By default, you get 5GB of storage space on iCloud, and if you need more, you ll have to pay extra.
You can also backup your Apple device data on PC or Mac using iTunes. First off, open iTunes on your Mac or PC > click on Help > Check for Update, to make sure you are running the latest version of iTunes. In the summary page where it says Backups, click on back up now under manually back-up and restore. This will take a local backup of all your photos, music, videos, messages and apps on PC, which you can restore later, if required. Lastly, also ensure that your iPhone is fully charged, or has at least has 50 percent battery. Apple won t install the OS unless there is 50 percent battery, but it is better to ensure it has enough charge to start the process.
How to download and install iOS 10
There are two ways to update our iOS device using iTunes or over-the-air (OTA) update.
Using iTunes: To download and install iOS 10 using iTunes, connect you Apple device to the computer using data cable. Now, open iTunes, tap on the phone icon on top left when it gets detected, and click on Check for Updates in the summary. If the update is available, it will prompt you to download it. Once downloaded, just click on install and iTunes will do the rest.
Using OTA: To download and install iOS 10 directly on your device, head over to Settings > General > Software Update. The update is roughly 1.1GB and may differ from one device to the other. Also, the time taken to download will depend on several factors including as internet speed. Also, as Apple servers will be bombarded with downloads, the download speed may be further affected. To ensure you aren t charged for mobile data, download the update via Wi-Fi. Once the download is complete tap on Download and Install after which your device will reboot to install the update.
Whether you are using iTunes or OTA for updating your Apple device, once it reboots, you will be asked to enter the Apple ID password and passcode to verify the update. Ensure that you have then handy. Also, the installation process may take about 15 to 20 minutes or more during which period you won’t be able to use your device.
