The new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6S Plus are already on sale in the US and other countries. They are equipped with Apple’s brand new A9 chip that brings in a host of improvements over last year’s A8 chips. Unlike before, this time, Apple has sourced the A9 chipset manufacturing to TSMC and Samsung.
Just yesterday, we learned that the TSMC A9 chipset runs cooler and offers better battery life compared to one made by Samsung. Popular YouTubers Jonathan Morrison and Austin Evans conducted a few tests and also demonstrated performance difference between TSMC and Samsung-made A9 chipsets.
Chipworks conducted a teardown, which reveals that Samsung made chipsets employ 14nm fabrication, whereas the ones by TSMC employ a 16nm fabrication process. While some people may believe Samsung made A9 processors to be a more efficient, it doesn’t appear to be the same. So how do you determine if your new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus sport a Samsung or TSMC version of the A9 chip? Let’s find out.
How to find your iPhone 6s chipset manufacturer
Luckily, it’s not a difficult task. There are quite a handful of apps available on Apple’s iTunes Store that offers these details. You can download Lirum Device Info Lite or Battery Memory Status Monitor, both of which are free apps.
Lirum Device Info Lite: Once you download this app, open it and scroll down to the section “Storage and Model Information”. Here, the app will show the model number of your iPhone 6s / iPhone 6s Plus.
Battery Memory Status Monitor: Open the app and tap on System. It will display information such as the model, name, kernel, OS, number of CPUs and cache size among others. The ‘Model’ under Device section is what we need to look for.
One these apps show the model number, we need to decipher what the model numbers means.
For iPhone 6s:
N71AP is the A9 chip made by Samsung, whereas the N71MAP is the A9 chip made by TSMC
For iPhone 6s Plus:
N66AP is the A9 made by Samsung, whereas the N66MAP is the A9 chip made by TSMC
So essentially, the chipset with model number ‘m’ indicates the ones made by TSMC, which according to the YouTubers offer better battery life and overall performance.
