How to flash Android 7.1.1 Nougat factory images, OTA files on your Pixel or Nexus devices

Google has now started rolling out the Android 7.1.1 Nougat update. Here is how to flash it on Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 9, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P and Pixel C devices.

android nougat update

A couple of weeks after releasing the Android 7.1 Nougat Developer Preview 2 update for Nexus devices, Google has now started seeding the Android 7.1.1 update for Pixel and Nexus devices. The update brings Pixel exclusive features such as app shortcuts, circular app icons, GIF keyboard and monthly security update for December to these devices. What’s more, the update also adds VoLTE HD voice calling support for using Reliance Jio SIM card on Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones. However, Google Assistant still remains exclusive to Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones. Also Read - New avatar of Google Chrome’s offline dinosaur game: How you can play

“When we launched Android Nougat, we were excited to deliver even more ways to make Android your own. Today we’re rolling out Android 7.1.1, an update to Nougat that showcases more ways to express yourself, along with a handful of other sweet features and improvements to stability and performance. Android 7.1.1 brings many of the cool features of Pixel to everyone,” Google said in a blog post. The Android 7.1.1 Nougat update also includes new emojis to reflect gender equality, along with a slew of male and female emoji characters. Google Messenger, Google Allo and Hangouts are some of the apps that now support sending GIFs directly from keyboard. The update is available for Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, Pixel C, Pixel and Pixel XL devices. The update is being rolled out over-the-air (OTA). Once the update is available, you will be notified about the same, but alternatively, you can head over to Settings > About > System Updates. Tap to check the update and tap ‘download’ if available. Now, as the update is being rolled out in a staggered manner, it may take some time till it reaches your device. If you can’t wait till then, you can manually flash using ‘factory images’ or ‘OTA’ files.

Before you flash the factory images or OTA files, ensure that you take complete backup of your contacts, messages, photos, music and videos. On your Nexus or Pixel device, head over to Settings > About Phone > and tap for 7-8 times on Build Number to unlock Developer Options. Then go to Settings > About Phone > Developer Options and enable USB Debugging.

Next, download and install the latest Google USB drivers for your smartphone from here, followed by ‘Minimal ADB and Fastboot’ from here. Unpack the .zip file on your desktop. Open this folder, hold ‘shift’ button on keyboard, right click and click on ‘open command window here.’ Next, connect your Pixel or Nexus device with your PC using the data cable, type adb devices in the command prompt window and hit enter. Here, your device should show under ‘connected devices.’

You then need to download the respective ‘factory image’ or ‘OTA’ file for your Pixel or Nexus device. Download the ZIP file and save it in the ‘Minimal ADB and Fastboot’ folder on the desktop. Rename the ZIP file to something simpler, like your device name — nexus5x or pixel or pixelc.

How to flash factory images on Nexus and Pixel devices

Unzip the factory image ZIP file and extract the contents in the Minimal ADB and Fastboot folder, and then follow the below steps.

Step 1: Open command and type adb reboot bootloader. Alternatively, you can also switch off your device, and press and hold combination of — Volume Up + Volume Down + Power when the device boots.

Step 2: If the bootloader is locked, type fastboot flashing unlock and hit enter. In case of older devices, type fastboot oem unlock and hit enter.

Step 3: Type flash-all and hit enter. This will flash all the required files such as bootloader, baseband firmware and the operating system. Once the installation is complete, your device will reboot with the new OS.

Step 4: Once again boot to fastboot mode as done in ‘Step 1.’ Now, you need to relock the OEM. For that type fastboot flashing lock and hit enter. In case of older devices, type fastboot oem lock and hit enter.

How to flash OTA image on Nexus and Pixel devices

Step 1: Open command and type adb reboot bootloader. You can also use the buttons combination to access the bootloader mode, as we did above.

Step 2: Once the Android logo and red exclamation mark appears on the screen, hold the power button and press volume up. This will bring up the menu where you need to select apply update from ADB option.

Step 3: In command prompt type adb sideload nexus5x. Here, ‘nexus5x’ is the renamed file name of the ZIP file (OTA) that you downloaded.

Once the update is complete, your device will then reboot with the new operating system.

Disclaimer: Be very careful while flashing the factory image as even a single mistake could brick your device. Proceed at your own risk.
