While Microsoft is working on bringing multi-gesture support to its forthcoming operating system Windows 10, HP has got something bigger in mind. As hinted last week, the company has launched Sprout, a 23-inch computer that completely ditches the mouse and keyboard in favor of a built-in projector called “Illuminator”, and multi-touch capacitive touch for an immersive experience that reminds us of Minority Report. Priced at $1899.99, the computer is available to buy in the starting today.
Much like any other desktop computer, Sprout too has a traditional monitor display. But the 23-inch display has a projector mounted on top like a desk lamp. The projector is laced with a four cameras that employs Intel’s RealSense 3D technology. There is a 14.6-megapixel high-resolution camera too, and a DLP projector, and an LED desk lamp. But instead of traditional mouse and keyboard, the Sprout comes with an interactive touch mat that supports gestures, and allows you to manipulate with data with your bare hands while providing a unique dual-screen experience.
The projector beams images on the mat, which supports input from as many as 20 fingers. The operating system recognizes the mat as a second monitor. HP’s software dubbed Workspace, enables it to run several apps including a range of Sprout’s, and Windows Start screen and any Modern apps right on the mat. The Workspace allows users to easily play with the images and move 3D objects from one display or an app to the other.
Underneath the Illuminator is a depth-sensing RealSense camera which scans 2D and 3D objects that have been put on the mat. Users can scan photos, books, and even objects, which can then be included in existing projects or can be edited, with the bundled HP Create editing tool.
Among other apps, Sprout also comes with the HP Rooms group conferencing app that allows it to share workspace between different Windows 8.x-powered devices. One can also scan objects in 3D mode, which creates a rotatable object.
As a device, the Sprout is powered by a 3.2GHz Intel i7 processor paired with Nvidia GeForce GT 745A graphics, and 8GB of RAM. It also has a 1TB hybrid hard drive for storage and runs on Windows 8.1. The 23-inch display has a screen resolution of 1080P while providing support for 10-point touch and DTS sound.
