HTC has reportedly dropped plans of launching a Windows Phone device with a 5-inch display. Bloomberg reports that CEO Peter Chou halted plans for the device as it wouldn’t be able to compete with its own Android offerings and those from rivals, especially Samsung. Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 operating system can only support up to 720p displays, unlike Android where latest flagship smartphones with big displays are sporting higher resolution 1080p displays. This is the latest blow for Microsoft, which has hoped that Windows Phone 8 would fillip it back into the smartphone market, where it has lagged since 2007 and lost a couple of years developing Windows Phone 8. Most high-end smartphones next year are expected to sport 1080p displays, with HTC already having launched one called the Butterfly. This would put Windows Phone smartphones at a great disadvantage in the high-end high-margin segment. Also Read - Microsoft teases a rekindled partnership with HTC at Computex 2014: Report

Ever since the launch of the iPhone and Android operating system, Microsoft has fallen short, especially with hardware support. Earlier versions – Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 7.5 – did not support expandable memory through microSD cards or multi-core processors, which ensured that Windows Phone could never compete adequately with Android or iPhone. While Microsoft ensured these hurdles were out of the way with Windows Phone 8, it could easily trip on display support this time. Probably Microsoft did not envision 1080p displays on smartphones to be available so soon, especially when phones with 720p displays haven’t really been around for very long.
