HTC Desire 10 Pro hands-on and first impressions

The HTC Desire 10 Pro is priced at Rs 26,490 and will start selling from December 15. While touted as the best Desire smartphone yet, can it survive the highly competitive market? Here are our first impressions.

Desire 10 Pro

HTC s journey in the smartphone industry is two-decades-old but the Taiwan-based company has been serving the Indian consumers from the last ten years. Over the years, HTC has launched mobile phones with world s first features. Adding to its Desire line of smartphones, the company announced its newest smartphone the HTC Desire 10 Pro which has been priced in India at Rs 26,490. The smartphone will go on sale starting December 15 and will made available across online and offline channels. With the little time I spent playing with the HTC Desire 10 Pro, here are my first impressions of the smartphone. The HTC Desire 10 Pro is labeled by the company as its best Desire phone yet. To begin with, one of the good things about the smartphone is its overall designing. It features a matte finish and there are gold metallic lines running across the chamfered edges. The same gold outlining embraces the camera ring at the back. The color of the smartphone has been kept symmetrical in the front as well as the rear, which adds to the overall appearance of the smartphone. At the back, the camera sits in one corner with the LED flash beneath it. What makes the design of the HTC Desire 10 Pro appealing is its rear fingerprint sensor which is barely noticeable and sits above the logo. On the right is the volume rocker and a slightly ancient-looking power button. The left is reserved for the dual SIM tray. The bottom features the charging port along with the speaker grille and on the top is the 3.5mm headphone jack. The smartphone is available in four color choices of stone black, polar white, royal blue and valentine lux. On the whole, the smartphone looks neat, feels huge (for people with smaller hands), but does not weigh as much. Also Read - HTC Wildfire E Lite smartphone design leaks online

The display on the HTC Desire 10 Pro, at 5.5-inches, offers full HD (1080p) resolution and comes with Corning Gorilla Glass protection. In the experience zone, the lighting conditions were quite erratic, yet the display didn t disappoint and offered great color contrast and good viewing angles. The touch response was also pretty fast. Coming to the interface of the HTC Desire 10 Pro; the smartphone runs Android Marshmallow 6.0 with HTC Sense UI on top. There are times when certain custom skins unnecessarily clutter the interface and make simple operations difficult. However, with the HTC Sense UI, there was no instance of difficulty or cluttered appearance.

HTC Desire 10 Pro-02

The HTC Desire 10 Pro is powered by MediaTek s 64-bit Helio P10 octa-core processor paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage. It also comes with support for microSD card for storage expansion up to 2TB. When you consider the price tag, the choice of the Helio P10 processor comes as a disappointment, especially when you consider some of the phones in this range are powered by Snapdragon 820 or equivalent MediaTek processors. That said, in the short time that I used the smartphone, there was no instance of any app crashing or the smartphone heating up. However, I will reserve my comments on the performance of the smartphone till a detailed review.

Now let s talk about one of the USPs of the Desire 10 Pro — camera. HTC’s smartphone comes with a 20-megapixel rear camera with a 13-megapixel front camera for selfies. The rear camera comes with f/2.2 aperture, LED flash and laser auto-focus. There are lot of built-in camera options so you don t need to reach out for photo-editing apps. HTC Desire 10 Pro-01

The 13-megapixel front camera with f/2.2 aperture comes with what is touted to be the world s first 150-degree selfie panorama mode. The front camera is supported by Retina Flash. In the given lighting conditions, both the cameras offered sharp results with good color contrast. While a megapixel count alone doesn t decide the quality of the image output, having tested the camera for a wee bit, I can say that it has the potential to turn out to be one of the biggest highlights of the smartphone. More on the smartphone s camera shall be included in our detailed review.

Another USP of the HTC Desire 10 Pro is the support for 24-bit Hi-Res audio and Dolby-enhanced BoomSound speakers. It also comes with HTC BoomSound headset with dual microphone and noise cancellation. Real-life testing, yet again, remains to be undertaken. However, the technology has been powering some of HTC s previous smartphones as well, including the HTC 10.

The HTC Desire 10 Pro is kept ticking with a 3,000mAh battery with fast charging capabilities. HTC claims the smartphone can survive internet usage on Wi-Fi for up to 8 hours and offer talktime of up to 19 hours on 3G. However, it needs to be tested in real-life conditions before we can say for sure just how good the battery is. In terms of connectivity, the smartphone supports dual SIM, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.2 and GPS. At the given price, the HTC Desire 10 Pro is in direct competition with premium smartphones such as the OnePlus 3 and the Honor 8, priced at Rs 27,999 and Rs 29,999 respectively. But in truth, the Desire 10 Pro’s price tag feels inflated, especially when you take into consideration the specifications and features on offer. The likes of Lenovo Vibe K5 Note and Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 offer much of the same (and some better) specifications, albeit at half the price. It is however too soon to write off the Desire 10 Pro, and we shall reserve our judgments till we have reviewed the new smartphone. Stay tuned.
