HTC is rumored to be working on two new smartphones as it prepares to make a comeback in the ever competitive smartphone space. One of the devices is said to be the flagship HTC U12, while another one is believed to be the Desire 12.

HTC U12 was recently seen at a 5G summit indicating top-shelf specifications and thin-bezel design. HTC Desire 12, on the other hand, is expected to offer modern bezel-free design at a budget. Evan Blass was the first to reveal that HTC is planning to launch another phone in the Desire series called the HTC Desire 12, and now the smartphone’s specifications, price and release date have also been revealed.

Android Authority claims that it has got pictures of HTC Desire 12’s retail box, which details the final specifications of the device. The Desire 12 will be a mid-range with 64-bit quad-core MediaTek chipset coupled with 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage. It will likely have thinner bezels than smartphones in the Desire series, and feature a 5.5-inch display with HD+ (1440×720 pixels) display with an aspect ratio of 18:9.

On the camera front, the HTC Desire 12 is said to feature a 12-megapixel rear camera with support for 1080p video recording. But the front camera is said to be a 5-megapixel shooter. It will have slot for two nano-SIMs and a microSD, and house a 2,730mAh battery. With the specifications having leaked via retail box, it is likely that the smartphone’s render will also start showing up online.

The details of Desire 12 have surfaced just a week ahead of the official start of MWC 2018, and it is likely that the Taiwanese smartphone maker will launch the device at the world’s largest mobile gathering in Barcelona. HTC was once the most aspirational Android smartphone maker, and its products were often compared directly to that of iPhone. But the company has lost momentum, and is now in damage control mode.

HTC recently sold a part of engineering team to Google for around $1.1 billion. It also reported tenth straight quarterly decline in profits, and its smartphone chief Chialin Chang quit last week to start his own AI startup. The introduction of Desire 12 and HTC U12 later this year might help the company re-emerge as a mainstream smartphone brand.
