Despite recent reports, HTC hasn t given up on smartwatches, and moreover it plans to launch them next year, CNET reports. Earlier this month reports surfaced online claiming that HTC had scrapped plans to make smartwatches, likely because of the rising costs, ‘wow factor’, and growing competition. But apparently that s not the case. HTC is known for its premium devices, and the smartwatches too will get the same treatment. The publication suggests that HTC is making smartwatches that will be able to differentiate themselves on the design front from the market s current offerings. We got a glimpse of the HTC s Android Wear-powered smartwatch earlier this year. Another report from earlier suggested that HTC was making a circular smartwatch.
As far as the Android Wear smartwatches are concerned, they all seem to have missed on a couple of things, and have mostly failed to lure customers. The recently announced Motorola Moto 360 is an exception, though it too isn t perfect just yet either.
Apple Watch will start shipping next year, and we already know the features it sports. What all these smartwatches have in common is the short battery life. If HTC is launching smartwatches next year, it has enough time to analyze what everyone has done, and perfect those shortcomings, as well as add their own exclusive features.
