Google last year launched its Made by Google smartphones – the Pixel and Pixel XL. Google will be continuing its Pixel lineup this year and the smartphones have been confirmed to remain in the premium category. HTC will continue to be Google s manufacturing partner for this year’s Pixel smartphones as the former bagged a two-year contract from Google last year, reports DigiTimes. HTC, however, is now competing with three other companies for the Pixel 3 smartphones, which Google will release in 2018. According to the report, along with HTC, companies like LG, TCL and Coolpad are in line for the orders of the Google Pixel 3 smartphones. Although HTC will be manufacturing the Pixel 2 smartphones, LG is reportedly the frontrunner for the Pixel 3 smartphones. It may be recalled that LG was the hardware partner for Google’s ambitious Nexus-line up. LG built the Nexus 4, Nexus 5 and Nexus 5x. Though, Google also tied up with Huawei and HTC for the Nexus 6P and Nexus 6 devices respectively.
Given a history with Google, LG as a preferred manufacturing partner of the Pixel range isn’t really surprising. As far as other players go, TCL is already making BlackBerry-branded smartphones. Coolpad, on the other hand, is primarily a major player in China and has presence in India as well. That being said, origin of the manufacturer is unlikely to matter for the consumers as Google likes to present its Pixel line as purely in-house designed and developed smartphones, unlike the Nexus-lineup.
The report further notes that orders for the Pixel 3 lineup could reach up to 5 million units. A higher number of inventory is going to benefit Google as it faced problems while meeting with the customers’ demands. HTC managed to ship over 2.1 million Pixel and Pixel XL devices since the time of its launch to Google. The numbers for the Pixel 2 lineup is however not known but we can safely predict it to be on the higher side. The report also says that the Pixel 2 smartphones will come in two variants codenamed Muskie and Walleye which have been the case in the recent leaks and rumors. The Google Pixel smartphone codenamed Walleye was recently spotted on the Android Open Source Project running on Android OS. The Google Pixel smartphone codenamed Muskie was revealed by a source which seemed pretty confident about the authenticity of the leak. The Pixel 2 smartphones are also said to be differentiated by size. Other than that, there wasn t any information leaked about the Walleye and Muskie smartphones. Another report, however, suggested that Google will improve camera capabilities, especially performance in the low-light, in the Pixel 2 range of smartphones. The camera on the Pixel 2 will not come with a boost in the megapixel count, but it is said that there will be insertion of certain subtle features that will make even the standard megapixel count deliver maximum results.
Google Pixel’s camera peformance has been widely praised. The Google Pixel sports a 12.3-megapixel rear camera along with 1.55 m pixels and f/2.0 aperture. It also comes with PDAF and laser detection auto-focus technology. Up front, the smartphone houses an 8-megapixel camera with f/2.4 aperture and fixed focus.
