It s no secret that HTC is working on a wearable. In the past, the Taiwanese technology company has shown interest in the wearable category, and last year it squashed rumors that claimed that the company had scrapped its smartwatch project. A new report on Bloomberg claims that the company will be unveiling its first smartwatch in the first week of March at the Mobile World Congress. The report also says that the company will be launching its next flagship handset — codenamed M9 — at the event as well. The smartwatch will be heavily focused on fitness tracking features. It will have integration with Under Armour s fitness service. A spokesperson for HTC told VentureBeat that the new wearable will be worn on the wrist and will be very different from anything currently on the market. The Bloomberg report suggests that the device could be an electronic bracelet with Google Now integration and with a capability to play music. The M9 smartphone is being reported to come with a similar design as in M8 and M7. The handset will be powered by Qualcomm s octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor. Other pegged features of the handset include a 20-megapixel rear camera with an HTC UltraPixel selfie shooter. It’s an interesting change, as the company has, until now used UltraPixel camera in the rear-side of the phone. The company has received mixed response from consumers for placing the UltraPixel camera in its flagship smartphone. Many people find the 4-megapixel count on the flagship handset a downer.
The One (M9) will come with Dolby 5.1 audio speakers. At this point it remains unknown if the company has plans to ditch its signature BoomSound speakers. The smartphone is pegged to come with Android Lollipop software with HTC s latest Sense 7 UI with improved location-based services. It will come in gold, grey and silver colour options.
The company sent out an invitation last week to an event at MWC on 1 March, with the tagline utopia in progress.
