HTC U with ‘Edge Sense’ to launch on May 16; here's what we know so far

HTC U’s frame will be embedded with sensors which can be squeezed or swiped to perform certain actions.

HTC U to launch on May 16

HTC recently launched two smartphones under its U series, called U Ultra and U Play. Soon after, rumors started pouring in hinting at a third smartphone codenamed Ocean and a launch has been anticipated for long now. HTC has now shared a teaser on Twitter, announcing May 16 as the official launch date for the HTC U smartphone. HTC shared a five second video for the launch with the tagline ‘Squeeze for the Brilliant U’. The event is scheduled to begin at 2:00PM in Taipei, which would be 11.30AM IST. The HTC U teaser demonstrated squeezing the side edges of the smartphone which produced a sound. HTC s emphasis on the Squeeze factor is in line with numerous leaks which point out that the HTC U will come with sensors embedded on the frame of the smartphone. This is called Edge Sense and it will allow users to perform various functions by squeezing or swiping along the sides of the smartphone. It is said the gestures can be customized for different functions according to the user s preference. Through the short glimpse of the teaser, the HTC U is seen in blue color with very thin bezels. HTC U specifications, features

According to recent leaks and rumors, the HTC U is expected to feature a 5.5-inch QHD display. At the core of the smartphone is likely to be Qualcomm s Snapdragon 835 octa-core processor paired with Adreno 540 GPU. The smartphone is also expected to come with 4GB of RAM, and storage options of 64GB or 128GB. In the photography department, the HTC U could sport a 16-megapixel rear camera at the rear, and a 12-megapixel selfie camera. On the software front, the HTC U will most likely run on Android 7.1 Nougat with HTC Sense 9 UI running atop. The smartphone is expected to be backed by a 3,000mAh battery. Recent leaks suggest that the HTC U will come with IP57 certification for water and dust resistance. It is also suggested that the smartphone will come sans the 3.5mm audio jack which makes sense, since the U Ultra and U Play both do not feature one. The HTC U which is expected to be the flagship device will most likely be priced at a premium range. The HTC U Ultra which is the higher variant of the two, was launched in India with a heavy price tag of Rs 59,990. The HTC U Ultra boasts a 3D Glass design and is equipped with artificial intelligence and machine learning. Elaborating on this, both the HTC U Ultra and U Play come with HTC Sense Companion, an AI personal assistant and uses machine learning to perform certain tasks.
