We are just a week away from the anticipated annual tech fest Consumer Electronic Show (CES) 2017- but each day new details about upcoming consumer products keep emerging. The latest product to show up is the next iteration of HTC s VR headset, called HTC Vive 2. The original HTC Vive was first unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in 2015, followed by its successor early this year. However, for 2017, HTC appears to have a different strategy. The Taiwanese company has already been rumored to be working on a new version of its VR headset. Now latest reports suggest that the Vive 2 could be detailed as soon as the CES 2017. It is expected that the VR headset will come with upgrades over its predecessor in terms of design and features. The Vive 2 is further expected to boast a wireless design and come with two 4K screens with refresh rate of 120Hz, more than the rate of 90Hz on the current model. However, the Vive 2 is unlikely to be a standalone device and might still require a PC to use it. Interestingly, there have been rumors in the past which hinted at HTC going the Oculus way and could be introducing new controllers for the VR headset. Unlike the current version, the Vive 2 is also speculated to be a smartphone-based headset similar to the Google Daydream View and Samsung Gear VR.
When HTC first launched its Vive VR headset, the company claimed that over 15,000 units were sold within first 10 minutes of sale. The Vive is priced at $799 and requires one to have a high-end gaming PC. Following the launch of HTC Vive, the company also introduced the second-generation headset called the Vive Pre. Highlight of the Vive Pre is its front-facing camera that essentially blends the virtual world and the real world by allowing users to be aware of the real world, even as they lose themselves in the immersive content. Interestingly, HTC has also sent media invites for a January 12 event. It had been earlier rumored that the company could take wraps off multiple products including HTC One X 10 smartphone, HTC Under Armour smartwatch, along with the Vive VR 2. Now, whether HTC releases its Vive 2 headset at the CES 2017 which is scheduled to take place from January 3 or announces the device at its January 12 event, remains to be seen.
