Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei, which rolled out its payment service in China last year, has reportedly filed for a patent to launch it in the US. Huawei Pay could be released as early as December as the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), where the patent was filed, takes three months to examine a filing, GSMArena reports. Speculations are also rife that Huawei Pay could reach parts of Europe as well after the smartphone-maker filed a similar patent with the European Union a few weeks ago. It is believed that Huawei would announce the service in the US during the launch of its Mate 10 device on October 16. Though Huawei recently became the second-largest smartphone vendor in the world, it has a muted presence in the US. Hence, a new phone coupled with a new service could warrant more eyeballs, and consumer interest. The US payments space, of course, is dominated by Apple Pay and PayPal which cover nearly 60 percent of all mobile payments. There’s also Samsung Pay, Android Pay, and a host of other small-and-big payments solutions. Huawei is also exploring carrier partnerships in the US before it brings Mate 10 to the country. A collaboration with AT&T is being talked about. ALSO READ: PayPal seeks license for mobile wallet in India: Report
The patent that it has filed is for “computer and mobile software for processing electronic payments and for transferring funds to and from others; authentication software for controlling access to and communications with computers and computer networks; magnetically encoded credit cards and payment cards.” Interestingly, this hints at a peer-to-peer payments option, which no other phone-maker’s service provide in the US. This could give it an interesting edge over rivals and help it create a a foothold in the market.
