After the launch of the Honor Play by Huawei’s sub-brand, the Chinese company may be on track to launch another gaming phone this year under the main Huawei brand. Jim Xu, the president of Huawei’s consumer business, has said in an interview that Huawei will be launching a gaming phone this year, as well as a foldable smartphone some time next year.

Gaming-focused phones are the rage of the year, as more people rely on their smartphones to play games over dedicated devices such as gaming PCs or consoles. The portability and always-handy nature of the smartphone, as well as the increasing catalog of quality games on both the Android and iOS platforms, means that gaming on your smartphone is a viable and fun alternative to buying a portable gaming device such as the Nintendo Switch.

Razer started the trend with the Razer Phone, and Asus and Huawei’s own sub-brand Honor have also launched gaming-focused smartphones this year in the Asus ROG Phone and Honor Play. The report by Gadget Match also suggests that the upcoming Huawei gaming smartphone will sport the company’s GPU Turbo technology, which is claimed to be a software boost aimed at increasing device performance by 60 percent while reducing battery consumption by 30 percent.

More details aren’t known about the gaming phone for now, but it will likely boast of plenty of RAM and storage, as well as a top-end SoC which could either be the current flagship Kirin 970 or something newer.

In the interview, Jim Xu also spoke of a foldable smartphone in the works, stating that 2019 will see the company launch its next big innovation. Samsung also has a foldable smartphone in the works, but details are scarce on it. While it’s likely that Samsung is also on track for a 2019 launch, Huawei has effectively thrown down a challenge to Samsung, and we’ll know in the coming months which of the two smartphone giants will bring their innovation to market first.
