Huawei has announced Kirin 710, its first mobile processor based on the 12nm process. The Chinese smartphone maker had been rumored to launch a mid-range mobile chipset for sometime now and we finally have the successor to Kirin 659. Huawei’s Kirin 659 has been seen on a number of mobile devices including the ones made by its e-brand Honor. The new Kirin 710 from Huawei’s HiSilicon is based on 12nm processx, which should offer better performance and battery life than the previous version based on the older 16nm process of Kirin 659. In terms of performance, Huawei claims that Kirin 710’s single-core performance will be 75 percent higher than that of 659 while the multi-core performance will be higher by 68 percent. The Kirin 710 is an octa-core CPU based on a dual cluster design that integrates four Cortex A73 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and four Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.7GHz. The graphics performance is handled by ARM’s Mali G5 GPU, which is said to be 1.3 times better than that of the Kirin 659 and also 1x more energy efficient. It also integrates LTE Cat 12 and Cat 13 bands and support for dual-SIM dual 4G VoLTE.
The new chipset from Huawei also brings enhancements in other areas including an updated image signal processor and digital signal processor. Huawei says the Kirin 710 CPU should enable significant improvement in the imaging department especially in low-light conditions.

Since we are talking Huawei here, the Kirin 710 also offers scene recognition and support for Face Unlock. While it does not have a neural processing unit, the Kirin 710 does support some form of basic machine learning and AI techniques. Huawei is expected to offer more technical details of the processor in the coming days but for now, the Kirin 710 seems to be a solid competition to chipset from Samsung Exynos and Qualcomm.
