Huawei P20 and P20 Pro, the two flagship smartphones from the Chinese smartphone maker, was launched early this year. The P20 and P20 Pro bring updated dual and triple camera setup respectively, and an enhanced night mode that uses algorithms and multiple shutter modes to capture an image.

While the feature was available only on the Huawei P20 and Huawei P20 Pro initially, the Chinese smartphone maker is now extending it to Mate series as well. The Night Shot mode is being released for Huawei Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, and the Porsche Design Mate 10 via a software update. The firmware with version number BLA-L29C being released for Huawei Mate 10 series is based on Android 8.0 Oreo, and is layered with EMUI 8.0.

The update should gradually roll out to all Huawei Mate 10 owners. Apart from Night Mode, the firmware also brings some bug fixes and other optimizations as well. With Night Mode, owners of Huawei Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro and Porsche Design Mate 10 will be able to capture night scenes, where the camera captures a number of pictures at different shutter speeds and combines them into a single image.

The result is often an image with less noise, and much brighter exposure. It also eliminates the need for a tripod to capture long exposure shots during low light scenario. Since it is a software driven approach, the Night Shot cannot be called perfect.

It does tend to blur moving objects like car or people in the frame but it does show how low-light photography has improved on the smartphone. Huawei also released GPU Turbo update for its flagship P20 series yesterday. With GPU Turbo, Huawei P20 users will be able to play games at higher frame rates and little or no interruption during the gameplay.
