Huawei P20 Pro showed what a smartphone camera can do in low-light scenario. The P20 Pro with triple camera setup launched early this year, captures some of the finest mobile images and it excels especially where there is little natural light. Now, a new report suggests Huawei‘s next flagship, the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro, might offer an even better low-light camera.
The Huawei P20 Pro features three camera sensors with a primary 40-megapixel sensor with 1.7 micron pixel size. Since the resolution is really big, Huawei offers an option to save pictures in 10-megapixel resolution instead. The company produces that lower resolution image with a high-resolution sensor using pixel binning technology which combines four pixels into just one. In low-light, the pictures are further aided by Huawei’s Fusion Light technology, which captures multiple exposures to capture a well-lit image even in extreme low-light.
With the upcoming Mate 20 series, Huawei is reportedly introducing a slightly modified version of its software called “FusionMind”. The underlying technology will remain the same where Huawei’s camera algorithm will combine multiple pixels into one but FusionMind will also rely on Huawei’s A feature for enhancing the output.
On Huawei P20 Pro, the company lets you choose between saving images either at full resolution or at 10-megapixels. On the Mate 20 series, this process is believed to be automated further where the software will decide whether to store the full resolution image or the lower resolution one, depending on each scenario.
A leaked screenshot of DxOMark’s camera rankings claimed that Huawei Mate 20 Pro will be the new champion of smartphone camera. Even though DxOMark Labs has denied that screenshoot and claims it to be fake, the listing showed a score of 116. This will be much higher than the 109 score attributed with Huawei P20 Pro.

The leaks so far indicate that Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro series will feature triple camera setup placed in a square-shaped enclosure. The smartphone is said to feature same basic camera setup as that of P20 Pro but offer newer sensors. The camera will also be aided by dual ISP and dual NPU on Huawei’s Kirin 980 chipset. It needs to be seen how better the camera gets from current benchmark of Huawei P20 Pro.
