At IFA 2018, Huawei was expected to share details about the upcoming Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro flagship smartphones, but instead, the Chinese company only said they will be unveiling the Huawei Mate 20 series on October 16 at an event in London. The company has now sent out official save-the-date invites to media with little teaser of the upcoming smartphone. As teased in the invite, Huawei’s Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro will pack company’s own HiSilicon Kirin 980 SoC, which is world’s first chipset with 7nm FinFET technology. The invite upfront teases Kirin 980 in the top center of a smartphone outlining. Built around ARM s Cortex-A76 and Cortex-A55 CPU and Mali-G76 GPU, it is also the first chipset with Cat.21 modem to support upload speeds of up to 1.4Gbps and LPDDR4X RAM with speed of 2,133MHz. The invite also highlights AI in a teaser line ‘A Higher Intelligence’ is coming. Also Read - Huawei files patent for a smartphone with under-screen camera and five rear lenses
While both variants of Mate 20 are set to launch simultaneously with Kirin 980, the Pro variant of Mate 20 is expected to feature a triple rear camera setup placed in square array design with L-shape for lenses and fourth being the big LED flash. The invite doesn’t hint about the camera right away, but the position where Kirin 980 image is placed in the smartphone outlining is same as where the camera setup is rumored to be.
We have already seen many leaks and rumors about the Mate 20 series. Adding to that pile was a new image of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro dummy unit recently. The front of Mate 20 Pro in a leaked image showcased dual-curved screen like the Samsung Galaxy S9, and extremely thin chin at the bottom.

The alleged Huawei Mate 20 was spotted on the IFA show floor. Probably someone from Huawei team had the phone handy for testing and images unveiled the triple rear camera setup just like the leaked press renders. The handset is rumored to come in two colors – Blue and Black. Leaked press images showcased glass back design (it can probably include wireless charging) and a square Leica camera setup.
