While Huawei’s flagship Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro are jampacked with cool new features, some of them were not ready at launch and are just now being made live. Indeed we’re talking about the 3D Live Maker app here which makes 3D renders of objects with the help of accurately taken photos. If this sounds familiar to you, it’s because it isn’t exactly new stuff as Sony previously had such an app called 3D Creator, but did not manage to capture the spotlight.

Huawei showed the 3D scanning software at launch but it was not ready to be used. However, Mate 20 Pro users can now play with it. The feature basically uses the front shooter along with the Kirin 980 NPU. More specifically, it makes use of the 24-megapixel selfie camera, the dot projector, flood illuminator, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor and the IR camera to create a live 3D model of an object. However, the object should be between 15cm and 25cm. The process isn’t quite straight forward, to be honest, but when you’re done you can bring the 3D avatar to life. The 3D object can also be made to do various actions such as jumping, running, and even Kung Fu.

The 3D Live Maker app is exclusive to the Mate 20 Pro and the Mate 20 Pro Porsche Edition, and it isn’t perfect. The software is in its nascent stage of development as it can falter when creating complex avatars such as tentacles but well-shaped objects will turn out fine.

As XDA-Developers mentioned, the app can be downloaded from Huawei’s apps store where it is labeled 3D Live Maker. The Mate 20 Pro has an impressive set of cameras both on the front and the back. The front has state-of-the-art face recognition similar to Apple‘s Face ID and that hardware is what makes this 3D scanning possible.
