A new report suggests that Huawei has placed an order for 6.9-inch AMOLED panels with Samsung Display, which will likely be used in a smartphone that launches either in Q4 of 2018 or early 2019. A smartphone with a screen of this size would revisit the old days of traditional phablets, although modern design would mean that the phone is much easier to handle. Speculation points to the screens being sourced for the Huawei Mate 20, which is expected to launch later this year.
The Huawei Mate range usually launches in the fourth quarter of every year, and last year’s Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro carried on the tradition. While it’s unsure for now whether the big screen will be on the Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro or both, it’s fairly certain that both devices will sport larger-than-normal screens. The Mate line-up from Huawei is targeted at big-screen users, particularly in China where larger screens are favored.

For users looking to buy more compact phones, Huawei already has the P20 series, which includes the P20 Lite, P20 and P20 Pro. Big screen phones are preferred in China for various reasons, including the fact that Chinese language characters are larger, and require more screen space. Huawei is currently the market leader in China when it comes to smartphones, and a large screen device will go a long way in cementing its position at the top.
Interestingly, Apple and Samsung are both planning smartphones with bigger screens this year, with Apple reportedly working on a 6.46-inch screen for its reported Apple iPhone X Plus, and the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 expected to come with a 6.38-inch screen. As screens on smartphones get larger without significantly impacting the overall size, we might just see a resurgence of the ‘phablet’ in 2018 and ahead.
