Huawei launched its flagship P20 and P20 Pro smartphones at an event in Paris last month. The smartphones are a big departure from what we have seen from the Chinese manufacturer in the past, and it features a new design that can easily be described as a copy of Apple iPhone X launched late last year. The Huawei P20 and P20 Pro feature a 5.8-inch and 6.1-inch display with a notch or cut-out at the top similar to that of iPhone X. At the event, Huawei even told the attendees that the notch on their phone is smaller than the one on iPhone. Now, Li Changzhu, Huawei’s Vice President of mobile business told Forbes that the Chinese company thought of the notch idea “three to four years ago”, but it did not go ahead with the design because it thought that consumers won’t accept it. “Consumers, especially those in China, like symmetry, and the notch is not perfect in Chinese culture. They like squares or circles like rounded corners [of the display]. That’s perfect,” Li told the publication.
However, with the launch of iPhone X, it has become clear that consumers will like the notch if it serves a purpose on the device. “Apple using the notch was courage,” Li said. He added that the company was too conservative with the idea, and lost out on pioneering the design before Apple.
Among interesting features of the new P20 and P20 Pro are the Leica-branded cameras, and a new ‘Twilight’ color design that changes its hue depending on the light. Speaking about the color choice, Li said “Many on the team thought the [Twilight] color was too much and we should stick with pure colors.” But Li told his team that they do not represent everybody and went ahead with twilight color for P20 and P20 Pro models.

Li said the notch design and a bold color like Twilight show that the company is thinking outside the box. However, Li did not speak in depth about the Leica-branded camera system on the smartphones. With Huawei P20 and P20 Pro, Huawei can stake claim for making one of the most interesting smartphones in the recent years. Its overwhelming review and appreciation for the camera shows the company is not just piling on hardware, and is making a flagship worthy of taking on the likes of Apple and Samsung.
