Gartner has just released its report for the top smartphone vendors in the market by the end of Q2, 2018. The firm confirmed that Huawei has overtaken Apple to gain the second spot in the list of worldwide smartphone vendors for the first time.
As a result, Apple has been pushed to the third spot, and currently holds 11.9 percent market share according to the smartphone shipments in Q2. In the meantime, Samsung has managed to maintain a comfortable lead with 19.3 percent market share with 72,336.4 units shipped.
For perspective, Huawei currently holds 13.3 percent market share, which is a significant increase from the 9.8 percent market share that the company held a year back. Research Director at Gartner, Anshul Gupta issued a statement adding, “Huawei’s smartphone sales grew 38.6 percent in the second quarter of 2018. Huawei continues to bring innovative features into its smartphones and expand its smartphone portfolio to cover larger consumer segments”
Gupta went on to add, “Its investment into channels, brand building and positioning of the Honor devices helped drive sales. Huawei is shipping its Honor smartphones into 70 markets worldwide.”

Looking at the chart that details the growth of each brand when compared to lat same time last year, it is clear that Chinese smartphone makers such as Xiaomi and Oppo have taken the advantage of people moving away from old brands because of a number of different factors including pricing and lack of innovation.
Gupta added, “Minimal incremental value in Apple’s current-generation flagship iPhones led to slower growth in the second quarter of 2018.” He went on to add, “Growing competition from Chinese brands and consumers’ greater expectations for phone value is putting immense pressure on Apple to deliver enhanced value on their premium iPhones to foster growth.”
It is evident that this slow-down on Apple’s end is because consumers are waiting for the 2018 iPhone lineup and this will pull Apple ahead in Q4 this year. The report also included the mobile operating system market share where Android leads the charts with 88 percent market share, and 11.9 percent when it comes to iOS.
