Ahead of the much-awaited Mobile World Congress (MWC 2018), details on Huawei‘s upcoming P20 smartphone have surfaced online. Rumored for a while, the protective case of the purported flagship smartphone has now surfaced online reiterating the presence of a triple-camera setup along with a bezel-less display featuring a notch at the top. In a tweet by Slashleaks, the alleged protective case for the Huawei P20 has been revealed. The case hints at a vertically positioned camera setup at the rear. The case also highlights the top notch on the smartphone which resembles the one seen on the Apple iPhone X. The latest leaks are in tune with the earlier information revealed by leakster Evan Blass who claimed that the upcoming smartphone will feature a camera setup with not two but three cameras at the back. If past reports are anything to go by, the Huawei P20 will feature a new 3D camera, called ‘Point Cloud Depth Camera’ that will sit against the iPhone X 3D camera and will also aid in facial recognition. According to a report on Indian Express, the camera on the phone is likely to use fringe projection system for facial recognition instead of a laser. The new type of system will create a map of elevations and depressions of a face to measure close to 300,000 points in just 10 seconds.
Such a system will evidently make it much more accurate and precise as compared to Apple Face ID. Interestingly, the alleged case does not hint at a fingerprint sensor, which could mean the Huawei P20 could join Vivo Xplay 7 in featuring an on-screen sensor for fingerprint authentication.
Talking about the unusual camera system, it is expected that the triple cameras could have a resolution of a whopping 40-megapixel along with 5X hybrid zoom, co-developed with Leica. The front camera is rumored to have a 24-megapixel sensor.
In a separate leak, the Huawei P20 is shown without the iPhone X-like notch, while featuring the standard fingerprint sensor. Now, this brings us back to reports about the company launching three variants of the smartphone, called Huawei P20, Huawei P20 Plus and Huawei P20 Lite. So we can assume the triple camera system will grace the high-end model, while the remaining versions could sport the standard specifications.
As the company is yet to officially announce anything about its new lineup, it is wise to take the information with a grain of salt. It was earlier rumored that the new P20 willbe launched at MWC 2018. However, recent reports indicate that Huawei may choose to reveal the smartphones much later at a dedicated event on March 27 in Paris.
