The upcoming Huawei P20 Pro could be a Samsung Galaxy S9 rival if the latest reports are to be believed. We have already come across reports about the P20 Pro featuring a triple-camera setup, now a WinFuture report claims that the camera setup will include a massive 40-megapixel sensor. Huawei is expected to launch three models P20, P20 Lite, and P20 Pro on March 27. There’s also a likelihood of the P20 Porsche Design Edition, which will pack similar specs as the P20 Pro, but will feature a ceramic body and minute tweaks under the hood. Among the three models, the P20 Pro is the high-end variant, and is said to pack impressive specifications. With the 40-megapixel sensor in the triple camera setup, the company is likely to set an all-new camera standard. It is expected that the 40-megapixel sensor will be complemented with an 8-megapixel telephoto lens capable of ‘hybrid zoom’ which will allow 5x magnification.
It is to be understood that the 5x zoom is the total magnification as the optical zoom is only 3x. To this, add the third 20-megapixel monochrome sensor, which will be able to capture images in monochrome form, for depth, sharpness, and contrast. Leaks further indicate that the triple camera system will include IR-RGB sensor and a laser autofocus. The sensors in the triple camera setup will be co-developed by German camera maker Leica.
The report further explains the camera setup will include aperture sizes ranging from f/1.6 to f/2.4. Unlike the Galaxy S9, which uses the variable aperture to adjust according to subject, Huawei will reportedly use a system called ‘Light Fusion’. It is unclear as to how the system will work, but it is expected to work on oversampling technique.
To decode the triple camera setup on the P20 Pro, we are essentially looking at high-resolution, magnifiable images, which are as crisp and high on contrast as any DSLR will be capable of. Traditional DSLRs also do not offer such high megapixel sensors, so the P20 Pro already appears poised to kill any other ‘camera-centric’ smartphone out there in the market.
Meanwhile, a separate report on XDA Developers reveals that the Huawei P20 Pro will offer super slo-mo recording, a feature seen only the Sony Xperia XZ Premium and the Samsung Galaxy S9 lineup. These smartphones offer 960fps video recording at 720p resolution. The Huawei P20 Pro is also expected to pack similar capabilities for super slow motion video recording. The feature was spotted in the teardown of the EMUI 8.1 camera app from the P20 and P20 Pro’s firmware files.
