Huawei recently managed to dethrone Apple as the second largest smartphone brand during the second quarter of 2018. Now, the Chinese smartphone maker is trying to take a dig at Samsung, the largest smartphone brand in the world.
Soon after the launch of Galaxy Note 9 in New York yesterday, Huawei tweeted a picture of two of its devices, which it claims is the meaning of real upgrade. The tweet shows a Huawei P10 and Huawei P20 Pro side-by-side and highlights the triple lens system on the P20 Pro with 40-megapixel sensor and 5x zoom support. The tweet doesn’t make a direct reference to Samsung, but it does seem to take a dig at the South Korean smartphone maker.
We took a leap when we launched the #HuaweiP20Pro, we’re all about real upgrades that will make a difference everyday like a triple lens camera with 40mp, 5x zoom and much more. Imagine what will come next… pic.twitter.com/AjUS86YHyK

Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 9 on August 09, and the company touted it as a meaningful upgrade. However, it sports a design similar to its predecessor and comes with dual rear cameras that have been borrowed from the Galaxy S9+. The only major change with the Galaxy Note 9 is the updated S Pen, which now supports Bluetooth LE and can act as a remote shutter tool as well. It also comes with a larger 4,000mAh battery, which is 27 percent bigger than the one seen on Galaxy Note 8.
“We took a leap when we launched the #HuaweiP20Pro, we’re all about real upgrades that will make a difference everyday like a triple lens camera with 40mp, 5x zoom and much more. Imagine what will come next…” the tweet from Huawei reads.
The interesting part is the last phrase where Huawei says “imagine what will come next…” The Chinese smartphone maker is expected to launch its next flagship smartphones, the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro, later this year. There are reports of these new devices launching at IFA 2018 in late August but there is a possibility of Huawei delaying the launch to the end of this year like it has done in the past.

The Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro are expected to feature an updated Kirin 980 chipset that will offer faster performance. It is also expected to pack a 4,000mAh battery with greater efficiency and nearly edge-to-edge display design. There is a possibility that Huawei Mate 20 series will feature company’s own Face ID implementation that was showcased in November last year.
The details of Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro remain scant at this moment, but Huawei‘s progress in the industry has been rather phenomenal. It is the leader in the Chinese smartphone market by a significant margin and has been steadily closing the gap with Apple in the global market. It aims to ship 200 million smartphones in 2018, which might make it the second biggest smartphone vendor. Samsung, on the other hand, seems to be falling behind its Chinese rivals and losing market share.
