Chinese smartphone maker and telecommunication equipment giant Huawei is planning to launch a smartphone with foldable design ‘within a year’ according to a recent report on the internet. The company promised to achieve this as it aims to take the competition to the global smartphone leader Samsung. This comes right after reports emerged on the internet where Samsung confirmed that it was aiming to launch its foldable smartphone before the end of 2018. Richard Yu, the CEO for Huawei Consumer Business Group clarified that the company was already working on such a smartphone. Yu revealed these details while speaking to Die Welt, a German newspaper to establish that Huawei is serious about taking on Samsung. He painted an optimistic picture by questioning the relevance of a computer while stating that small displays on smartphones are the primary reason which pushes users to keep using computers. However, according to a report by BBC, market analyst Ben Stanton from research firm Canalys questioned the idea of replacing computers with foldable smartphones. He went on to point out that smartphone makers need to consider how a foldable smartphone will become successful commercially before thinking so far ahead. Stanton stated that he was not sure if a smartphone with a foldable display will appeal to many consumers . He did note that the smartphone industry was very close to delivering foldable smartphones that could turn into a reality commercially but commercial reality is quite different from the consumer demand that drives the market.
This report comes weeks after DJ Koh, Head of Mobile for Samsung Electronics noted that now is the time to deliver a smartphone with a foldable design. Huawei is set to launch its flagship Mate 20 smartphone at an event in London on October 16 and this new report suggests the next major product from the Chinese giant could be a foldable smartphone.
