Huawei unveiled the Kirin 980 SoC a few weeks back at IFA 2018. It s the first chipset to be based on the 7nm fabrication process, which Huawei claims makes it more 20 percent more power and 40 percent more power efficient compared to its 10nm predecessors. While we’re yet to see a smartphone packed with the Kirin 980 SoC, Huawei announced today that it will be offering its new chipset in the Indian market by the fourth quarter of 2018. Apart from being the first 7nm processor, the Kirin 980 SoC features an octa-core configuration with Cortex-A76 cores. The new A76 cores according to Huawei enables the chipset to offer 75 percent better performance and 58 percent better efficiency. It s also integrated with the Mali-G76 GPU, which delivers 46 percent more graphics processing power and 178 percent better power efficiency as compared to previous generations.
Huawei also claims the Kirin 980 SoC to be the most powerful and intelligent AI chipset. It is said to come with Dual-NPU, which can further boost performance with facial recognition, object recognition, object detection, image segmentation, and other AI related features. The new chipset improves on AI performance by 120 percent. It can also analyze issues with gaming performance and identify a better way to provide resources in real time.
The Kirin 980 is also the world s first chipset to feature a modem that supports LTE Category 21, which supports a downlink of 1.4Gbps. Along with that is also comes equipped with Hi1103 Wi-Fi module, which is the world s fastest Wi-Fi chipset that supports maximum download speeds of 1.7Gbps.

As per Huawei, there s plenty more the Kirin 980 can offer to improve on premium smartphone experience. At IFA 2018, the company also announced that the first smartphone to come loaded with the new chipset will be the upcoming flagships Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro, which have been confirmed to launch in October 16 in London.
