Idea Cellular, which is the third-largest telecom operator in India after Airtel and Vodafone, is also in talks with both Ericsson and Nokia for the required equipment, and is expected to award a deal in the coming days, ET reports. The company s biggest rival, Airtel is expected to move over to VoLTE in key markets over the next 12-18 months. Vodafone India, on the other hand, is already having trial run of VoLTE services in select areas, and it is using Nokia s IMS solution for deployment of services. Currently, Reliance Jio is the only telecom operator in India to offer VoLTE services to over 72 million subscribers. The telecom operator is also using Nokia s IMS solution. Currently, telecom operators use LTE network for data transmission, but for voice calls, the operators switch bands to 2G network. VoLTE allows operators to allow both voice and data via same network without switching bands, and thus also offer HD voice for crystal clear audio.
