It’s still a few days before IFA 2018, Europe’s biggest consumer electronics tradeshow, officially gets underway in Berlin. However, it seems Samsung doesn’t want to wait, as the company has just taken the wraps off a new monitor.
The CJ79 (model identifier: C34J791) is a 34-inch curved QLED monitor that uses Samsung’s Quantum Dot technology for enhanced visuals. It covers 125-percent of the sRGB color spectrum and has a contrast ratio of 3,000:1. Thanks to the support for AMD’s FreeSync, the monitor can automatically synchronize the refresh rate of the graphics card to reduce screen tearing and stutter, which makes it ideal for gaming.
Samsung CJ79 has an ultra-wide curved display with a resolution of 3440×1440 pixels. The 21:9 aspect ratio means that you can get a seamless dual-monitor experience on a single display. Its Picture-by-Picture (PBP) feature can display visuals from two different sources, while the Picture-in-Picture (PIP) mode provides better multitasking. The highlight of the CJ79 is Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, and Samsung claims the monitor is the first of its kind to have that.

Compatible with both PCs and Macs, Samsung CJ79 comes with two Thunderbolt 3 ports that are capable of transferring data and visuals at speeds of up to 40 gigabits per second, or up to eight times faster than USB 3.0 ports. It’s also possible to charge devices with up to 85W output using the same ports.
Commenting about the launch, Seog-gi Kim, Executive Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “Over the years, Samsung has revolutionized the viewing experience for professionals alike. The CJ79 is our latest endeavour in taking curved monitors to the next level that highlights our commitment to innovation. The addition of Thunderbolt 3 connectivity aligns to that vision and connects customers to infinite possibilities.”
Samsung has also announced the CJ89 43-inch and 49-inch curved monitors. The C43J89 comes with a 43-inch panel with an aspect ratio of 31:10, resolution of 3840×1200 pixels, response time to 5ms and a refresh rate of 120Hz. The C49J890, on the other hand, comes with a 49-inch panel with an aspect ratio of 32:9, and resolution of 3840x1080pixels. The screen has a refresh rate of 144Hz, and response time of 5ms.
