A new set of protective cases for the iPhone 5S and Samsung Galaxy S5 aim to simplify snapping a self-portrait. Their maker, iLuv, claims that they are the first in the world to feature a wireless remote shutter release, meaning that there’s no need to hold your phone at arm’s length in front of your or your friends’ faces in order to snap a visual memento.
Instead, set the phone up and use the remote control, which clips into the back of the case, to take a picture. But that’s just the start. As well as a choice of colorful cases, iLuv is also offering what it calls a ‘Selfy ecosystem’ of products including a pocket-sized tripod and handlebar and car windshield mounts, all of which snap into place via a special mount on the case’s rear. Away from simplifying self-portraiture, the Selfy case actually offers proper protection for a smartphone handset. It is double layered and shock absorbent so should protect against everyday knocks and scratches. As for the remote shutter operation, whether it’s for the iPhone or the Galaxy S5, operation is instantaneous because it works via Bluetooth and communicates directly with the handset’s camera, rather than via an app. Just launch the camera, set up the phone for the right shot and then press the button on the remote. The Selfy case, available in black and pink, will cost $49.99 when it goes on sale later this month, while the accessories will cost between $19.99 and $24.99.
