Launched at a special event in New York, the Galaxy Tab S range consists of two tablets, an 8.4-inch and a 10.5-inch model, but both boast the same AMOLED display technology that manages to pack in an impressive better-than-high-definition number of pixels — 287ppi for the 10.5-inch model and 360ppi for its smaller sibling. But it’s not just a question of pixel count. AMOLED displays behave differently from TFT and LCD displays because of the way they are lit. Each pixel of an OLED screen has its own light and so can respond independently. It means richer, deeper blacks, stronger, more textured reds and yellows, and more responsiveness. “We know consumers want the best screen when purchasing a tablet, and as an undisputed leader in display technology, we’ve brought our industry-leading Super AMOLED screen to the Tab S for an unrivaled viewing experience in both connected and Wi-Fi options,” said Gregory Lee, president and CEO of Samsung Telecommunications America and Samsung Electronics North America Headquarters. And the screen is ‘smart’ too. It adapts to the task or the content, for example paring back the intensity and the strength of the whites for reading an ebook, or cranking the performance right up when watching a film. The AMOLED technology also means that the screen is still easy to see across a bigger range of viewing angles. To further underline the display’s credentials, Samsung has partnered with a host of top publishers to launch something called Papergarden — a magazine experience developed specifically to take advantage of the tablet’s screen, it will offer users special versions of titles like Cosmopolitan, Elle, Vogue, Architectural Digest, GQ, plus National Geographic photographic content and even a three-month trial of Marvel Unlimited for comic fans. Away from the screen, as one would expect from any premium Samsung device, the tablets are powered by huge processors, are packed full of RAM (3GB), support MicroSD cards for storage expansion and have a good battery life. They also get the same fingerprint scanner found on the Galaxy S5 phone for biometric locking and unlocking and for validating online payments and, for the first time, the rear-facing camera gets a flash too.
It’s just a shame that like so many premium Samsung products that they’re slightly let down by the choice of materials for the external casing. But the truth is that the display is so good that most owners probably won’t even notice. The Wi-Fi versions of the Tab S 8.4 will be available for $399.99, while the Tab S 10.5 will be $499.99 when they go on sale in July. LTE/4G versions of the tablets will be coming to market later this year.
