IMC 2018 Day 1 Highlights: 5G for India by 2020, new Realme phone coming, Samsung 5G trial and more

Here are the big highlights of day 1 of India Mobile Congress 2018.

India Mobile Congress 2018 (IMC 2018) kicked off today at New Delhi with focus on 5G roadmap for India. The second edition IMC will see more from big technology players and telecom companies in next three days till Saturday, October 27. The event witnessed more than 15,000 visitors on Day 1 including international exhibitors, media, global speakers and other delegates. Here are the highlights:

5G for India by 2020

Today on Day 1 at IMC 2018, big names like Reliance Jio, Samsung, Nokia, Airtel and Huawei gave a glimpse futuristic 5G technology and how it can shape India’s digital future in the years to come. Various technology major also showcased India’s 5G potential with live 5G demonstrations.

The chairman Reliance Jio, Mukesh Ambani during the IMC 2018 insugration ceremony started that India will be ready for 5G and will cover 4G fully by 2020. Every phone in India will be a 4G enabled and every customer will have access to 4G connectivity in next two years.

Reliance Jio aims top 3 spot for India in fixed broadband

Reliance Jio which saw unprecedented growth since its inception in 2016, shared that it aims to improve India’s 135th rank of fixed broadband data consumption by JioGigaFiber to top three nations in few years. Reliance Jio now holds 51 percent market share in broadband services already.

Mukesh Ambani during his speech at IMC 2018 said that Jio is now aiming to take the digital drive to the villages of India with JioPhone.

Samsung 5G trial plans announced at IMC 2018

At India Mobile Congress, Samsung announced its plan for 5G trial. The company said it will start India’s first large-scale 5G trails in the first quarter of 2019 in collaboration with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

During IMC 2018 inauguration keynote, Youngky Kim, President and Head of Networks Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “Samsung will pave the way for 5G to unlock the full potential of India together with industry leaders. We are witnessing a rise in adoption of new technologies, inspired by Digital India and spurred by the transition to 4G.”

Airtel 3.0 and Airtel 5G

Bharti Airtel showcasing its futuristic 5G technology based Airtel 3.0 at IMC 2018. The company has a vision of connected devices with 5G ranging from advanced IoT based connected homes, connected cars, augmented reality (AR) based holographic communications and more.

Airtel said it has also set up ‘Airtel X’ labs in Bengaluru for research and development aiming in the areas of AI, IoT, AR and VR.

“Ubiquitous high speed networks will open doors to a digital world that will be full of exciting digital innovations. Having conducted India’s first in-lab 5G test with Huawei, we are delighted to extend our partnership to demonstrate cutting edge AR and VR based use cases for 5G,” said Randeep Sekhon, Chief Technology Officer, Bharti Airtel.

MediaTek Helio P70 based Realme phone to launch in India

MediaTek today hosted a keynote to announce its next generation P-series Helio P70 chipset at IMC 2018. The mid-range chipset is the successor to Helio P60 that was launched earlier this year at MWC. Interestingly, the company invited Realme‘s India CEO, Madhav Seth at the event to announce their partnership for next Realme smartphone that will be based on Helio P70.

Speaking to BGR India, Madhav Seth said that the upcoming Realme smartphone will not be a successor to existing Realme 2 or 2 Pro. It’ll be a different device all together, which they plan to launch by first half of December 2018.

Nokia starts producing 5G radio equipment in India

Nokia at IMC 2018 announced that it has started a new manufacturing unit in Chennai manufacturing plant which will produce 5G radio equipment in India. The Chennai plant is one of the largest telecom equipment manufacturing plant in the country. It recently reached 4 million units annual production milestone of 2G, 3G and 4G units. It serves both domestic as well as global customers, shipping to over 100 countries.

Huawei Mate 20 Series coming to India next month

Huawei at IMC 2018 partnered with Airtel to showcase 5G use case demos for a connected devices. Also, apart from sharing plans for 5G, Huawei also announced that it will bring company’s latest flagship Mate 20 series to India next month.

Earlier this month, Huawei launched its latest flagship Mate 20 series of smartphones at an event in London. The line-up includes four flagship smartphones – Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20 X, and Mate 20 RS Porsche Design.
