Emerging countries are driving the current boom in smart devices shipments with nearly 1 billion units out of 1.7 billion expected to be shipped in 2014 ending up in these countries, according to IDC. The report further mentions that countries like India, China, Brazil and Russia are especially responsible for this boom. In terms of the total number of devices shipped, these countries will overtake developed countries like US, UK and Japan. Talking of numbers, more than 662 million units are expected to ship to these countries, compared to the 650 million shipments to developed countries. Talking of the devices themselves, it is smartphones and tablets that will drive the growth. Out of the 1.7 billion smart devices, nearly 1.4 billion will be smartphones and tablets. Smartphones are also steadily becoming cheaper and will be continuing in the current trend, with sub-$300 smartphones pushing the sales numbers in the emerging countries.
