As on July 13, Facebook reported a potential audience of 241 million active users in India, compared to 240 million in the US. According to The Next Web contributor Simon Kemp, active users in India are up 27 percent in the past six months alone, which in number is an increase of over 50 million users, as compared to the 12 percent or 26 million user growth recorded in the US over the same period. In the top 10 rankings of cities across the world, New Delhi has the most number of users from India with 15 million active users. However, despite the shooting potential audience, social media penetration in India remains relatively low, with just 19 percent of the country s total population using Facebook in the past month. Interestingly, the TNW report also addresses the gender imbalance in India that is evident in the Facebook reach as well. The report notes that men still represent three-quarters of the country s active Facebook profiles. Whereas, in the US, 54 percent of the platform s active users are women. Also, Facebook s active users in India also skew young, with more than half of the country s users below the age of 25.
Other than India, the top cities, which combined account for 8.5 percent of active users are listed as Bangkok, at 35 million, followed by Jakarta, Dhaka, Mexico city, Istanbul, New Delhi, Lima, Cairo, Sao Paulo and Ho Chin Minh at 14 million.
