When planning for a holiday, most of us book train tickets well in advance. But there are times when there are sudden changes in the plan, which is when you either need to prepone or postpone the journey. This is when most people end up canceling the tickets, and rebooking, only because they aren’t aware that there is a way to change the journey date. Yes, Indian Railways lets you prepone or postpone your RAC, waitlisted or confirmed ticket, in case you didn’t know.
Sadly, the facility is only available for offline tickets, and not for the ones booked online via IRCTC website. You can prepone or postpone your tickets in the same or higher class for the same destination after paying the charges. The facility can only be availed once at the station counter. You will have to surrender the ticket at the reservation office at least 48 hours before the scheduled departure of the train.
You can also extend the journey beyond the original destination. This can be done by approaching the ticket checking staff before reaching the destination station. You will simply have to pay the fare for the extended portion of the journey. Indian railways also allow you to upgrade your ticket from a lower class to a higher class, subject to availability of tickets. This can be done by approaching the ticket collector, and you will have to pay the fresh reservation charges, along with the difference in fare.
Lastly, if you have a confirmed ticket and you are unable to travel, you can also transfer it to one of your family member – father, mother, brother, sister, daughter, son, wife or husband. However, the transfer request must be submitted at least 24 hours before the train departure. You can also change the boarding station, and for that, you will have to submit a written request to the station manager of station from where you were supposed to board the train.
