InFocus has launched a new smartphone in India under its Epic series. Called the Epic 1, it is one of the first smartphones to be powered by MediaTek s deca-core processor. The company has also been teasing the camera prowess of the Epic 1 including the burst mode that can capture 30 photos in two seconds, the selfie camera with f/1.8 aperture and more. The InFocus Epic 1 comes with a metal unibody design and a fingerprint scanner for biometric authentication. With a price tag of Rs 12,999, the InFocus Epic 1 will face fierce competition from the likes of Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, LeEco Le 2 and Coolpad Note 5. The company has also started taking pre-orders for the same. The Redmi Note 3 is offered in two storage variants 16GB one priced at Rs 9,999 and 32GB variant priced at Rs 11,999, and can be purchased from Amazon India or Mi.com/in. The LeEco Le 2 will set you back by Rs 11,999 and can be purchased either from LeMall.com or Flipkart. Lastly, the Coolpad Note 5 is priced at Rs 10,999 and can be purchased from Amazon India. Display, processor and RAM: All four smartphones flaunt a 5.5-inch full HD display with Corning Gorilla Glass protection. Under the hood, the Epic 1 is powered by MediaTek s 64-bit Helio X20 deca-core processor (four Cortex A53 cores + four Cortex A53 cores + two Cortex A72 cores) paired with 3GB of RAM and Mali T720 MP2 GPU. The Coolpad Note 5 is powered by Qualcomm s 64-bit Snapdragon 617 octa-core processor (eight Cortex A53 cores) paired with Adreno 405 GPU and 4GB of RAM. At the heart of Xiaomi s Redmi Note 3 runs Qualcomm s Snapdragon 650 hexa-core chipset (four Cortex-A53 cores and two Cortex-A72 cores) paired with 2GB or 3GB of RAM depending on the storage variant you choose. The LeEco Le 2, on the other hand, has a slightly powerful Snapdragon 652 octa-core processor (four Cortex A72 cores and four Cortex A53 cores) paired with 3GB of RAM.
Storage: The InFocus Epic 1, Coolpad Note 5 and LeEco Le 2 are equipped with 32G of onboard storage. While the Note 5 and Epic 1 also include microSD card slot for further expansion, the Le 2 does not support storage expansion. The Redmi Note 3, on the other hand, is offered in two variants 16GB storage + 2GB RAM and 32GB storage + 3GB of RAM, and it also includes a hybrid microSD card slot for further expansion. Camera: InFocus has been touting the camera capabilities of the Epic 1. It sports a 16-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, phase detection auto-focus (PDAF), auto image stabilization and object tracking feature. There is also a burst mode that can capture 30 photos in two seconds. Up front is an 8-megapixel selfie camera of aperture f/1.8. The Redmi Note 3 and Le 2 sport 16-megapixel rear cameras with dual tone LED flash. While the Note 3 can only shoot full HD videos, the Le 2 can record 4K videos at 30fps as well. For selfies and video calling, the Redmi Note 3 is equipped with a 5-megapixel snapper, whereas the Le 2 is equipped with an 8-megapixel sensor. The Coolpad Note 5, on the other hand, sports a 13-megapixel rear camera of aperture f/2.2 with LED flash and full HD video recording capabilities. For selfie lovers, an 8-megapixel front-facing camera with LED flash is also present. The front camera can also record full HD videos.
Battery: The Epic 1 and Le 2 are armed with a 3,000mAh battery along with support for fast charging. The Redmi Note 3 comes with a 4,050mAh battery whereas the Coolpad Note 5 is armed with a 4,010mAh battery with fast charging support.
Operating system and connectivity: All four smartphones run on Google s Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS, wrapped under custom UI. Coolpad has a layer of Cool UI 8.0, Xiaomi has MIUI 8 whereas LeEco has its EUI running atop. On the connectivity front, all four smartphones feature dual-SIM card slots, 4G LTE and VoLTE voice calling support, Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi 802.11ac. While Redmi Note 3 and Coopad Note 5 come with a microUSB connectivity port, the Le 2 and Epic 1 gets the latest USB Type-C port. In case of Le 2, the USB Type-C is also used as an audio output port as it lacks the legacy 3.5mm audio connector.
On paper, the Epic 1 looks like a worthy contender in the smartphone affordable segment, but we will reserve our judgment until we review the smartphone.
