Instagram’s next big feature for its Stories platform could be an option to add music to your ephemeral messages and videos. At Facebook’s annual developer conference, F8 2018, Instagram announced third-party integration for its Stories feature, including Spotify for music streaming. The feature worked in such a way that users can share their music directly to Instagram Stories from Spotify, and the artwork will appear with an option to play directly on Spotify. However, it now seems that Instagram has plans to build its own music service within Instagram Stories.
Instagram code reveals an unannounced “music stickers” feature that will let users to search for and add a song to their posts. The photo-sharing platform is also testing a way to automatically detect a song that you are listening to and display the artist and song title as a visual label within Instagram Stories.
Instagram Stories is one of the most popular stories platforms with over 300 million monthly active users. With the ability to add music stickers, Instagram Stories could turn an amateur video footage into a more listenable video experience. With music stickers, Instagram Stories will become an even stronger competitor to Snapchat. However, it could be a bigger threat to Musically, an app meant for lip syncing to music.
Instagram did not confirm the feature but it did confirm the roll out of Focus mode for shooting portraits, QR-scannable Nametags for following people and video calling, which was announced at F8 last week. A user named Jane Manchun Wong was successfully able to test the feature, and claims Instagram crashed when she tried to post anything using the music stickers. Wong also notes that Instagram automatically detected a song she was currently playing on her phone, and created a sticker for it.
Interestingly, it does not seem to be using Shazam for music recognition. TechCrunch notes that Instagram Stories’ music stickers feature is using licensing deals with the major record labels signed by its parent Facebook. The social media giant currently has music licensing deals with Sony, Warner, Universal and European labels.
The code further reveals an unreleased “Search Music” feature built-in beside its location and friend-mention sticker search options inside Instagram Stories. These music stickers can be searched using tabs for “Genres”, “Moods”, and “Trending”. The feature works in such a way that once you pick a song and add it as a music sticker to your Story then a clip of that song will play while people watch your story. Instagram Stories currently supports videos that are only 15 seconds long, and it is not clear how it will pick song for the story.

There is a high possibility that Instagram will work with a partner to enable this feature. It partnered with Giphy for the GIF stickers feature within Instagram Stories. It is also not clear whether Instagram will let you add music stickers to just videos or photos as well. Instagram is proving to be one of the fastest growing platforms within Facebook’s long list of social services. Instagram has also managed to limit the growth of Snapchat with Stories and unlike its parent, it has also managed to stay away from controversies.
