Instagram now has over 800 million monthly active users (MAU), which is up from 700 million MAUs back in April. The social media and photo blogging platform has added 100 million MAUs in this duration. According to CNBC, 500 million users out of the total MAU are daily active users, which means the company has maintained its lead over Snapchat. The growth of 100 million MAU from Instagram’s last report is attributed to a host of features introduced on the platform lately. It had over 300 million monthly active users, as announced by the company in December 2016. One of the highlights of Instagram presently is the Stories and Instagram Live, which has seen hefty engagement since its launch a year ago. According to August report, the Snapchat app had 173 million active users. While another report by US-based marketing analytics company Jumpshot tells that Snapchat has a bigger market share in the US than Instagram. As per the report, Snapchat logged 52 percent of new US users last month as compared to 48 percent for Instagram. Although Instagram and other Facebook-owned platforms like WhatsApp have integrated Snapchat-inspired features much recently, these entities have still been ahead in the competition. Carolyn Everson, vice president of global marketing solutions at Facebook revealed that time spent watching videos on Instagram has grown more than 80 percent year-over-year. The platform now logs four times as many videos uploads every day as compared to what it was a year ago. Also, Instagram now has double the advertisers from March, and now accounts for around 2 million active advertisers on its platform.
Keeping advertisers in mind, Instagram introduced new tools for publishers to use “Stories” as an organic medium to generate more engagement. Advertisers can use camera features like face filters, boomerangs, and drawing tools to create an organic piece of media, and then repurpose as an ad, Instagram had said in a statement
