It won’t be an exaggeration to say that today’s generation likes to stay connected 24×7. Children’s addiction to social media has reached worrisome levels, with countless studies talking about the overuse of services such as Facebook and Twitter out in the open. As such, many parents find themselves constantly worried about how their children use social media platforms (and by extension, the internet), and how much time they spend on them.

To help them, popular photo and video-sharing service Instagram has launched a ‘Well-being’ website (https://wellbeing.instagram.com/parents) . The portal is essentially intended to provide parents a basic introduction of Instagram, as well as educate them about the safety measures that the parents and/or children may not be aware of.

Instagram’s ‘Well-being’ web portal is not just about the app itself. It also talks about the way technology (and apps like Instagram) have become essential for today’s kids in their development and place among their peers.

It may be simple, but Instagram’s effort is an admirable one.  With the ‘Well-being’ website, the app joins the list of technology companies/platforms waking up to the fact that users’ addiction to their smartphones and online services has reached dangerous levels.

Earlier this year, at I/O 2018, Google introduced ‘Digital Wellbeing’ as a crucial part of its Android Pie operating system. ‘Digital Wellbeing’ features are intended to help users keep tabs on the time they spend on their smartphones and apps, and to assist them in managing that time better. At this year’s WWDC, Apple also introduced the ‘Screen Time’ feature for its upcoming iOS 12 operating system, which is also intended to help users manage their smartphone usage better.
