Let’s admit it, we all have some friend or relative whom we are made to follow on Instagram. We have also no doubt wished for an option to stop seeing their posts without actually unfollowing them. Well now there is one.
Instagram has started rolling out a new ‘Mute’ feature, which essentially lets you stop seeing the posts from a profile without actually unfollowing it. The company says that this is a steady roll out, and the feature should be reaching everyone “over the coming weeks”. At the time of filing this story, we don’t see the mute feature yet.
How to mute a profile on Instagram
To mute someone, head over to their profile on Instagram. Once there, tap on the three dots on the top-right corner for the options to pop up. Here you will see a new option called ‘Mute’ under Report and Unfollow. You can choose to mute just their posts, or both posts and Stories.
Once you have muted a profile, you will no longer see that person’s posts on your timeline. You will however still get a notification if the person tags you on any post or Story. You will also be able to see the person’s profile, where you can also choose unmute them. Rest assured the person will not have any clue if you have muted or unmuted their profile.

This is a feature that is long overdue, and it’s good to see the Facebook-owned company finally heeding to users’ requests. The mute feature is a polite way of blocking your friend or relative from your timeline without actually unfollowing them and potentially incurring their wrath. So if you are tired of seeing your selfie-loving friend’s posts from his vacation or cousins at weddings, you now know what to do. Mute them!
