It may be the most popular photo and video sharing service around the world, but there’s more to Instagram than just filters and hashtags. Among its many features is ‘Instagram Direct’, which lets you privately chat with other users. And starting today, those chats are about to get a lot more interesting.
Instagram has announced that now, users will be able to send each other GIFs in Instagram Direct messages. The functionality is powered by Giphy, a well-known online database of GIFs.
Sending GIFs in direct messages is a cakewalk. Users will now see a GIF button within their direct messages. They can tap that button to search trending GIFs, or look them up using specific keywords, or even use a random one, and send via direct message. The new feature is rolling out today to Instagram users on both iOS and Android. However, the functionality will most likely arrive through an update to the service’s official app, so keep your eyes peeled for any app updates that may be available on your smartphone(s).
Recently, Instagram reportedly began testing some new features for content creators. As part of the test, the service is letting creators put up geo-restricted posts and stories on the platform.

This will allow creators to make content that is aimed at any specific location without alienating viewers or followers who are not from that location. This new feature has the potential to increase the engagement without the risk of making followers feel disconnected from the content that they are seeing in the feed.
