Irrespective of how careful you are with your data, security breaches do tend to occur, with hackers gaining access to your crucial data. Every company from the likes of Facebook, to Yahoo and more have suffered security breaches, and the latest to join the club is photo sharing platform Instagram.

According to a report on The Information, Facebook-owned Instagram has a flaw in “Download Your Data” tool, which inadvertently exposed passwords of some users. In some cases, there may have been chances where the user passwords may have been exposed to public view. Instagram has reportedly come forward to acknowledge the issue by informing the affected users via an email.

The problem with the tool was that user passwords were exposed by the URL of the webpage tied to the tool. And if that wasn’t enough, the passwords were also stored on Facebook’s computers. At this point, the breadth of the flaw is unclear, but Instagram says the issue was “discovered internally and affected a very small number of people.”

Instagram has fixed the bug after it was spotted, and it has also affected advised users to clear their browser history to prevent others from seeing the URL with their password. The company also said that the passwords stored on Facebook’s servers have also been deleted since the issue came into notice.

For those unaware, the “Download Your Data” tool was introduced in April this year to comply with EU’s GDPR. However, the tool is available for users globally, and after you request your data, Instagram will email you a full copy your data in 48 hours. This will include everything that you shared on the platform.
