Instagram seems to be in design transition mode as it is reportedly testing a few different layouts these days. According to Android Police, Instagram might be adding a new sidebar to the user profile tab. The sidebar had appeared, and disappeared for them last week, but now it is said to be showing up for more users as well.

Instagram with its new sidebar seems like an effort to make profile tab’s top bar less crowded with icons. Currently, the profile tab’s top bar gets icon for settings, your story archive, saved/bookmarked posts, and the recommended accounts. In its latest test, Instagram is taking all, but your archived story button, and putting them under a new side menu that you access either by tapping the top right icon or by swiping, noted report.

As of now, the changes are in testing and appears to have rolled out to a few as server-side test. The new sidebar is reportedly seen on both version 59 (stable) and 60 (beta) of the Instagram app.

Meanwhile, Instagram has officially introduced new security and authentication measures for users to request verification within the app and ‘keep Instagram safe’. In a blog post, Instagram announced announced three significant updates as important steps to keep Instagram and its community safe.

First feature is to help you evaluate the authenticity of accounts with large followings on Instagram. In “About This Account” section, Instagram will provide more context about accounts with large followings such as “the date the account joined Instagram, the country where the account is located, accounts with shared followers, any username changes in the last year and any ads the account is currently running.”

Secondly, Instagram is increasing access to verification, which means more people will be able to get blue verified badge. Users will be able to request verification through a form within the Instagram app. To access the verification request form, go to your profile, tap the menu icon, select ‘Settings’ at the bottom and then choose ‘Request Verification.’

“To be verified, an account must comply with Instagram’s Terms of Service and Community Guidelines. We will review verification requests to confirm the authenticity, uniqueness, completeness and notability of each account,” noted Instagram.

Lastly, Instagram has enabled support for third-party authenticator apps. Soon users will be able to use third-party authenticator apps to log into their Instagram account. As of now, the support for third-party authenticator apps has begun to roll out and it will be gradually made available to everyone in the coming weeks.
